Clarisonic Smart Profile Sonic Skin Cleansing Brush Review

If you’re in the market for a new skin cleansing brush and you like your gadgets, Clarisonic’s Smart Profile may be just the device for you. I’ve tried both the Clarisonic Mia 2 ($219 AUD) and Mia Fit ($315 AUD) before, but the Smart Profile ($349 AUD) really takes the cake in terms of convenience and features. It still has all the features that Clarisonic fans are used to, with some added bonuses that will make your routine much easier.

Regular Clarisonic Features

“Sonic” cleaning

All the Clarisonic brushes feature the “sonic” oscillating back-and-forth brush movement instead of the one-way rotation on most brushes. This is great because it reduces torque on the skin so it jiggles instead of roughly twisting, giving you a thorough but still gentle clean.

Handy magnetic USB charger

The chargers that currently come with all three Clarisonic devices are USB-enabled, so you can charge them from the wall using a USB wall adapter (included with the brush) or through your computer or laptop. It’s very convenient for travelling, when you might not have the right adapter or enough adapters around. The chargers attach magnetically to the brushes, which avoids exposed metal surfaces so you don’t need to worry about rust or electrocuting yourself, or plugging it in the wrong way. (If your bought your brush a bit earlier, it may not have the USB feature.)

Smart Profile Features

Here are the extra features the Smart Profile has:

“Smart” RFID Facial and Body Brushes

Unlike the Mia 2 and Mia Fit, the Smart Profile is designed to be used for both the face and the body, and comes with both a Smart Dynamic Facial Brush head for normal and oily facial skin, and a larger Smart Turbo Massage Body Brush Head with stiffer bristles for exfoliating and massaging the body. Both brushes contain RFID chips that tell the handle which preprogrammed timer to use. Since brush heads get worn out over time, the Smart Profile also registers how long you’ve used the brush head for. A notification light comes on after 90 minutes (3 months) of use when it’s time to get a new brush head (don’t worry – the brush head won’t stop working if you decide not to change it!). The Smart Profile also works with regular brush heads, but these nifty features won’t function.

4 Speeds, Body Modes and Turbo Boost

The Mia 2 and Mia Fit both have two speed settings: Delicate, recommended for sensitive skin, and Universal, recommended for all other skin types. The Smart Profile has two more speeds on tops of this: Powerful, for removing heavy makeup or sunscreen, and Professional, for special treatments. On top of those, there’s also a Turbo button at the top which you hold down to give a temporary boost to the speed for areas that need a little more cleaning. There are also stronger speeds in Body Mode, which includes 2 normal speeds and 1 pulsating pattern.

“Smart” Programming

The most useful feature I’ve found on the Smart Profile is the preprogramming. While the Mia 2 and Mia Fit have a 1-minute timer which pulses to tell you when to move to a new area of your face (20 seconds each for the forehead and nose/chin, then 10 seconds for each cheek), the Smart Profile also allows you to double the time to 40+40+20+20 seconds. Additionally, if you use it with the Smart brush head, it also automatically switches to a lower speed for the cheeks, since they tend to be more delicate than the T-zone for most people. You can also override it to manually set your own speeds if you prefer by pressing the +/- button for 3 seconds.

The Smart body brush also has its own program: 30 seconds of pulsating foaming massage, 2 minutes of continuous oscillations for cleansing, then 30 more seconds of pulsating for a finishing massage. These programs are activated using the RFID chips in the respective brush heads. With the regular brush heads, this programming won’t work, but you can still use them with the standard timers.

Longer Battery Life and Warranty

The Smart Profile also comes with 1.5 times the battery life of the Mia 2 and Mia Fit – it’ll run for 27-128 minutes on a single charge, depending on which brush head and speed you use. It’s a welcome addition, especially if you use it to clean your body as well. There’s a battery life indicator on the handle which helps you avoid running of of battery mid-cleanse. It also comes with a 3 year warranty rather than a 2 year one.

Verdict

Since I use a lot of acids in my skincare routine I only use the Clarisonic brush 2 or 3 times a week on my face, but since I received the Smart Profile I’ve found myself reaching for it a lot more for body exfoliation. It’s particularly nice after exercise, when I know my skin needs exfoliating but I don’t have the energy for all the buffing. My favourite facial brush head is the Luxe Cashmere brush, so I can’t really take advantage of the preprogramming for my face (though I’m hoping they’ll come up with an RFID chip enabled Luxe Cashmere brush soon!).

If you’re after a top-of-the-range skin cleansing brush for both face and body, the Smart Profile will be perfect for you. If you only want a Clarisonic for washing your face, and you don’t mind switching between speeds while cleansing and remembering how long you’ve used your brushes for, then the Mia 2 or Mia Fit will work nicely. If you’re in the US, the Clarisonic Smart Profile is currently on sale for $199 on Amazon with some pedicure accessories as well (there are also sales for the Mia 2 and Mia Fit too).

  1. Angie from HotandFlashy on YouTube did a video a couple of years ago about “fake” Clarisonics. Her’s turned out to be a fake and she purchased it off of Amazon. I purchased my Smart Profile off of QVC to be safe and I only paid $199.00.
