Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencils are making their way to Australia, and I’ve managed to swatch them all! These pencils contain a twist-up matte lip shade with a smudger on the other end, so that you can create effects like ombre lips and the super-chic “just ate an ice block” lip look that’s all over Asia right now.

There are 8 shades available:

05 Pink Insanity – cool lilac pink
10 Fast & Fuchsia – bright hot pink
15 Berry Misbehaved – deep fuchsia pink
20 Orange Ya Glad – orange-tinged red
25 Cherry Cherry Bang Bang – bright pink-tinged red
30 Partner in Crimson – bright red
35 Plum Please – deep pink plum
50 I Like to Mauve It – light mauve pink

I used the blurring silicone (? – it says “elastomer” on the label) smudger to blend out the swatches at the bottom. As you can see, they blend pretty well, but it’s definitely not foolproof! The wind-up lipstick reminds me of wind-up crayons – they’re slim enough that you don’t ever have to worry about sharpening them.

I personally found that the staying power of these is pretty good – the main problem is that, like most matte lipsticks, they accentuate any dry skin you have on your lips, so you need to make sure you use a lip scrub and a heavy balm the night before!

I tried using them for a Korean ombre lip look – here’s the result with Fast & Fuchsia and some Instant Rewind concealer, with some Jane Iredale lipgloss on top:

I’m not 100% on board with this look yet, but I’m sure I’ll come round – it does look pretty in photos!

Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencils are $17.95 and are available in Australia from February.

  1. I love the Korean makeup look, so I’m looking forward to these hitting AUS! I also find it to be much more low maintenance than a typical lipstick look 🙂

  2. I think the blurred look is pretty in pictures, though I feel a bit like Queen Amidala when I have tried to wear it XD Good news is that it’s a hella lot easier to apply a red with this technique because you don’t have to worry that much about smudges!
